Chapter 5: Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues

How does technology use contribute to social and equity issues in schools?

Technology use contributes to social and equity issues in schools mainly when teachers are using a particular software they would like all of their students to use. The teacher may be tempted to just copy the software for all the students because it is a simple process. This is piracy, though. Some teachers might do it anyway but this sets a bad example for the students. Even though it is very easy to make copies of software there are pretty hefty consequences. There is also a problem with affording enough software for all of the students. If the teacher cannot afford the software for all of the students to use at the same time it may not be fair to allow some students to use it and not others.

  1. I could not agree with you more. If the school or teacher can not afford the software for all of the students legally, then the idea should just go out the window. It is not worth the risks and it would be setting a bad example for the students.
