Q: How can mathematical modeling be applied in education?
A: Mathematical modeling can be used in education in order to create hands-on products that can be manipulated. Mathematical models can reinforce material learned in certain content areas. For example, if I were teaching a lesson on the Earth as a sphere and my students made a model of the Earth it would be a great way to reinforce the material because the students would have to take the aspects of the Earth into consideration when making the model. For example, they have to know to tilt the Earth at a 23.5 degree axis and to include an equator in the middle of the sphere.

Chapter 9: Technology Integration in the Content Area, Including Early Childhood, Educationally Challenged, and Multidisciplinary Units
What are the benefits of using technology across disciplines?
It is very beneficial to use technology across disciplines. Technology can be incorporated in a number of ways. In mathematics, the computer is beneficial because it can be used to input data and create graphs. Technology can be beneficial in science when performing lab activities. The calculator is especially useful during lab activities because it provides very quick solutions to math problems. In language arts the computer is beneficial because when typing a paper the writer can receive immediate feedback on spelling and grammar. In order to teach our students the importance of technology we must demonstrate the benefits of technology in our classrooms.

Chapter 7: Planning and Developing Technology-Rich Instruction
What is Data-Driven Decision Making?
Data-driven decision making is when decisions are made based on a wide collection of data. This data could be everything from student test scores to enrollment rates. Teachers can use data from one school year in order to make appropriate decisions for the following school year. Teachers can analyze data about assessment scores in a particular area and determine whether or not the teaching strategies they used worked or not. Keeping data can be a very useful management tool because it helps the teacher stay organized.

Chapter 6: Learning and Teaching with Technology
What constitutes a technology-enriched learning environment?
A technology enriched learning environment is one where technology is incorporated into the curriculum and everyday classroom activities. These classrooms allow students to type papers on computers, rather than writing papers all the time, and the teachers may even review the paper on screen with the students rather than reviewing printed versions. These classrooms also allow students to make presentations or videos for assignments, rather than writing essays all the time. In order for technology-enriched learning environments to be successful the students must be focusing on the content, rather than the actual software itself. These learning environments are essential because they allow for collaborative work and immediate feedback.

Chapter 14: Producing and Presenting, Including Podcasting and Digital Storytelling
What role can digital storytelling play in education?
Digital storytelling seems like a fun way to learn and can be used as a form of communication. Some of the approaches are using video, animations, audio, music, and photos. This can be used in a classroom by requiring the students to retell an event in history. By using digital storytelling the students may be able to remember the historical event more easily because they have to use higher order thinking in order to develop the story.
