Chapter 11: Mathematical Modeling

Q: How can mathematical modeling be applied in education?

A: Mathematical modeling can be used in education in order to create hands-on products that can be manipulated. Mathematical models can reinforce material learned in certain content areas. For example, if I were teaching a lesson on the Earth as a sphere and my students made a model of the Earth it would be a great way to reinforce the material because the students would have to take the aspects of the Earth into consideration when making the model. For example, they have to know to tilt the Earth at a 23.5 degree axis and to include an equator in the middle of the sphere.

  1. Your Earth model example is good for describing mathematical models. I agree, these can be helpful in the classroom for reinforcing certain ideas and concepts.
